Alan K. Outram is Professor of Archaeological Science at the University of Exeter and co-director of its centre for Human-Animal-Environment Bioarchaeology (HumAnE). He is a former executive editor of the journal World Archaeology and the current editor of Science and Technology of Archaeological Research. Alan is a specialist in zooarchaeology, particularly known for his work on horse domestication, early pastoral societies, prehistoric exploitation of fats, and bone fracture analysis. In addressing these research questions, he has frequently worked within teams to integrate results from faunal analyses with those from residue chemistry, stable isotope studies and ancient genetics, leading to a number of key publications in journals such as Science and Nature.

His recent book is Subsistence and Society in Prehistory: New Directions in Economic Archaeology for CUP in 2019.
